S-Works 2012 Trivent Shoe - Folding Heel Cup

Coming soon is the S-Works 2012 Trivent Shoe

S-Works Trivent Shoe 2012

Features:
High modulus FACT 12.0 carbon sole
Lightweight L4 Boa Closure with Fastback heel
Approx weight 280g

The new Trivent has a folding heel cup to open up the back of the shoe and a magnet closure to keep it down and a BOA quick draw lacing system. In transition, fold the heel back and use the magnet to keep it down. When you jump on the bike, you’ll slide into the shoe then turn the BOA dial, which brings the heel up and tightens the shoe around your foot. The wire runs the entire length of the opening, so the fit is secure. A small velcro tab at the front of the shoe allows for further fit adjustment.

Also helping with ease of entry are the small plastic clips placed near the ankle on the outside of the shoe, perfect for rubber banding the shoes to your bike to keep them level as you run out of transition. With level shoes and a wide opening, athletes can slip their feet right into the shoe without having to pedal with their feet on top of the shoe.

Check out the Specialized video on this great shoe.

Share the road safely with those 'lycra-clad clowns'

From: PerthNow
July 28, 2011
CADEL Evans' heroic performance at the Tour de France is being celebrated around Australia, as it should. The response has been wholly positive. Well Almost.

Despite Evans’ epic win, some media commentators have still felt the need to roll out the tired “well, I guess this means we have to put up with more lycra-clad clowns on the roads” line.

Sponsored rider Shannon takes out the Melbourne to Ballarat Cycling Classic

24 Jul, 2011 11:59 PM

TWELVE months ago Shannon Johnson was one of Australia’s fastest men on two wheels. Johnson was to the fore of the Australian Superbike Championship, having carved out a decade-long career in motor sport.

The 31-year-old is still making a mark on two wheels, but not at the same hectic pace. He has switched to pedal power and is beginning to make an impact in road cycling. Johnson landed his biggest road cycling win so far in the 101st Melbourne to Ballarat Classic on Saturday. He out-sprinted Ballarat Sebastopol Cycling Club duo Scott Townsend and Jeremy Doolan to take overall honours in two hours, 21 minutes, 52 seconds.

He was also the first masters rider home in the 93-kilometre event. Scratchmarker Steele Von Hoff had the fastest time of 2:08.44. The scratchmarkers finished about four minutes behind Johnson, but never looked like bridging the gap. Johnson, who rode off 18 minutes, said he was introduced to cycling as part of cross-training in his motorcycle career.

The 2002 Australian superbike champion said it seemed a natural move to make after last year deciding to give away motorsport, taking up race cycling in January. Johnson said there was no way he could have walked away from competitive sport. “I couldn’t have gone cold turkey. “I needed something to satisfy the competitive juices.”
Johnson has only contested a handful of open feature events, but is determined to go as far as he can in the sport.

He already has his sights on riding in the Australian masters road championships in Ballarat in October. Johnson said he began thinking about the possibility of winning on Saturday about 10km from the finish. “I was feeling good.”
Although he was unsure exactly how the course finished, Johnson said his cornering experience on motorbikes had been important as he rode off the wheel of Townsend to get the win.

Training with a power meter

TRAINING WITH POWER by Stephen Lane

Training with a power meter is becoming commonplace among elite and recreational cyclists alike. Although the initial outlay may be the rate limiting step for many cyclists if you are out on the roads with a specific purpose to train for performance enhancement then the benefits of a power meter are limitless. There are various models on offer and fortunately they are becoming more affordable primarily due to popularity. Different models do have pro’s and cons’.

The highly popular Cyclops Powertap is integrated in the rear hub. Therefore it is easily interchangeable between bikes and is as simple as swapping the rear wheel and head unit over and away you go. The negative of the Powertap model is that if you have a set of race wheels and your Powertap is laced into your everyday training wheels…. Well you see where I’m going. The alternative to the Power tap and a model that is becoming ever popular for its reliability, practicality and cost effectiveness is the Cinq Quarq model. The Quarq in my opinion is the pick of all the models available. I am lucky enough to run one on both my race bike and training bike. However if the bottom brackets are the same on both bikes it is a quick and easy process to swap from bike to bike.

So.. What can a power meter do that a simple heart rate monitor can’t? Well for starters it is instantaneous. If you are doing an interval at 80% then it may only be by the end of the interval that your heart rate reaches this intensity whereas power is there right from the start. Heart rate is also largely influenced by environmental conditions power on the other hand never lies. Secondary to these benefits is that once you become familiar with your power numbers it becomes a reliable tool to gauge intensity under any circumstance. In the lab the most common power number I use is an athletes peak power output (PPO). The number is the power output that corresponds with an athletes VO2max intensity. I then break this number down as a percentage of PPO to prescribe training intensities that elicit specific metabolic requirements within the body.

Supplementary to power meters are various software programs that allow each ride to be uploaded and your power and similar physiological/mechanical variables analysed. Such programs include Training Peaks or for a cheaper version Golden Cheater. These programs are a useful tool to monitor progress and to see changes in fitness and performance. You can ask any Professional cyclist what their sustainable power numbers are and Id bet they could reel of various numbers such as 1min, 5min and threshold power and max power of course for the sprinters. You may have noticed over the past few years that the power data for every Tour de France stage is posted on the Training Peaks website. I find it amazing to compare the numbers of the pro riders to that of my own and realize the huge numbers these guys are capable of.

In closing, spending thousands on a new bike to gain a small performance benefit is something we all do. However, it is the legs attached to the bike that requires the countless hours of precision training to produce the good numbers. A power meter is in my mind the best tool for any cyclist to monitor training intensity and track progress throughout a competitive season. Get into Bike N Bean and ask Paul which power meter will be best for you.

Sponsored Rider Stephen races Cycling Victoria Time Trial at Phillip Island

ALMOST PRO

Last weekend was the Cycling Victoria Time trial event held at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. This was my first time on the island, a little contrast to Shannon who once flew around this circuit as a professional super bike racer. The sun was out and the tarmac was dry, what more could a couple of pumped up cyclists want. My motivation was high but my form entering the event was an uncertainty as Id just spent two weeks off the bike over in France watching Le Tour. Shannon had been working hard and was more hopeful of a fast time. Taking up more than our fair share of parking space we set up the race machines to showcase the Specialized bikes that Paul has painstakingly been maintaining for us. Shannon gave me the run down on how to ride the circuit…. It was pretty simple…. If you brake Ill kill you!!! So basically ride hard and make it hurt was the plan. Well hurt it did!! Coming into the back straight on the first lap I was still averaging over 400 Watts but the power was dropping quickly. By the time I crossed the line it was below 300 Watts… Not what I was hoping and a reminder that an even pacing strategy is always the fastest!! I averaged just on 40km/h and knew it wouldn’t rank well. Shannon was a good 30seconds faster and just off the podium.

Caulfield Carnegie CC held a criterium style road race the same afternoon on the circuit. Seems as we were already there we thought we might back the mornings race up with another hit out. Shannon did an awesome job in A grade against the the likes of the VIS squad and ended up pulling the chase group around trying to reel in a early break containing Jason Spencer and the eventual winner from the VIS.

I faced 17 laps in B grade. The pace was tame early on so I charged off with a few other boys hoping to get a decent gap in a break away that could hold off the chasing group. All was looking good until about 5 laps to go when the morning’s race took its toll and a little jet lag kicked in and I had the sudden want to pull over and have a rest. The chase group caught up pretty close to the final lap and the rest is an unknown because I was nowhere near the front to tell you who actually won.  It was an awesome weekend of racing and it was good to be on the bike again.  Next week we are racing the Melbourne to Ballarat Handicap.. Fingers crossed for a good mark!!
