Making Australia more bicycle friendly

An initiative of Bicycle Industries Australia Media Release - 20 January 2012

The Cycling Promotion Fund has welcomed the announcement of the new Urban Policy Forum by the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport which brings together a national expert group to support the objectives of making our cities more liveable, sustainable and productive. The Fund is delighted to have been invited to participate in the Forum, a move which acknowledges the contribution that increased use of active travel, especially bicycling, can bring to our cities and urban centres.

The work carried out in recent years by the Cycling Promotion Fund has seen the formation of a national alliance encompassing the bus and rail industries, the health promotion and research sector and the local government sector, work which places increased bicycling as part of the solution to a more sustainable future for our cities.

‘We are very pleased to be able to continue our national approach to making bicycling an easier and more attractive option in everyone’s lives’ said Stephen Hodge,  ‘The ability to contribute our advice directly to Minister Albanese as a member of the Urban Policy Forum is a great opportunity.’ With around 80% of Australia’s GDP generated in our cities and a similar proportion of the population residing there, this focus is critical to our future. The Cycling Promotion Fund looks forward to being able contribute to this important agenda as part of the Urban Policy Forum announced today.
